Forensic Mitigation & Reentry Planning — Hartford, Maine
The Whole Story Matters. The Path Forward Matters Too.
Creating Belief provides forensic mitigation and reentry planning services for criminal defense attorneys, individuals, and families across Maine. We help uncover the full human story behind a case while building realistic pathways for rehabilitation and successful reentry.
Creating Belief was built from lived experience, human services knowledge, business experience, and the belief that people are more than the worst thing they have done.
We are not a law firm. We are not a clinical practice. We are a focused mitigation and reentry planning service that works alongside defense attorneys, individuals, and families to build the full human picture behind a case — and a realistic plan for what comes next.
Our work is grounded in accountability, dignity, rehabilitation, and practical planning. We do not make promises about outcomes. We do the work carefully, honestly, and with full attention to every case we accept.
What We Do

Collateral Interviews
Structured interviews with family members, employers, treatment providers, recovery supports, and community contacts when authorized by counsel.
Records Review & Chronologies
Thorough review of available records — medical, educational, criminal history, treatment, and employment — organized into clear, attorney-ready chronologies.
Sentencing Mitigation
Background investigation and narrative development to help defense attorneys present the full human context of a case at sentencing.
Probation Violation Mitigation
Reports and recommendations that explain the context of a violation while identifying realistic accountability measures and community-based alternatives.
Reentry Planning
Individualized reentry plans covering housing, employment, recovery supports, family reintegration, transportation, budgeting, and community resources.
Family Support & Resource Navigation
Guidance and resource identification for families navigating incarceration, reentry, and the uncertainty of what comes next.
Our Process
How We Work
Every case is different. Every person's history is different. Our process is designed to be thorough, respectful, and attorney-directed from start to finish.
Step 1: Consultation
We begin with a conversation — understanding the case, the individual, the timeline, and what the attorney or family needs from us.
Step 2: Interview & Information Gathering
We conduct structured, trauma-informed interviews with the client and gather background information to begin building the full picture.
Step 3: Records Review & Collateral Contacts
We review available records and, when authorized, conduct collateral interviews with family, employers, treatment providers, and community contacts.
Step 4: Narrative Development
We organize findings into a clear, compelling narrative that presents the full human context of the case — without overstating or editorializing.
Step 5: Reentry Planning
We develop a realistic, individualized reentry plan that addresses housing, employment, recovery, family, and community stability.
Step 6: Final Report Delivery
We deliver a comprehensive mitigation report and reentry recommendations to the attorney — thorough, honest, and ready for court.
Our Commitment
Why Only Two Cases at a Time
Creating Belief is intentionally small. We do not operate like a high-volume agency. We accept only two active cases at a time because mitigation requires careful listening, detailed review, ethical judgment, and individualized planning.
Mitigation is not a form to fill out. It is a careful reconstruction of a human life — the context, the trauma, the turning points, the strengths, and the realistic path forward. That work cannot be rushed. It cannot be templated. It requires time, attention, and genuine investment in each person's story.
When you work with Creating Belief, you are not one of fifty cases. You are one of two. That is a commitment we take seriously.
There are many mitigation services. Creating Belief is different — not because we say so, but because of how we work, who we are, and what we bring to every case.
Trauma-Informed Approach
Every interview, every report, and every reentry plan is built with a deep understanding of how trauma shapes behavior, decisions, and life outcomes.
Lived Experience
Our work is grounded in firsthand knowledge of incarceration, recovery, reentry, and rebuilding — not just academic or clinical training.
Human-Centered Storytelling
We do not reduce people to their charges. We build narratives that present the full human context of a case with honesty and care.
Systems Navigation Expertise
We understand how the criminal legal system, mental health system, housing system, and recovery system intersect — and how to navigate them effectively.
Rehabilitation & Accountability Focus
We believe accountability and rehabilitation are not opposites. Our work reflects both — honestly and without apology.
Only Two Cases at a Time
We limit our caseload intentionally. Every client receives our full attention, not a fraction of it.
